Aquatic Center Renovation
Chatham County Aquatic Center
The Chatham County Aquatic Center features a 50-meter Olympic-size pool and warm-up pool, and was designed and built for the 1996 Olympic Games. The original roof was an air-supported bubble structure, but the operators were constantly grappling with issues including temperature, humidity control and a lack of fresh air during swim meets. Other problems ranged from maintenance of air-tight doors, stand-by generator malfunctions, and the life span of the air-supported system. The facility was showing signs of aging and many options were being considered.
The owner asked for proposals and Structures Unlimited, Inc., was given the opportunity to be part of the team to propose a new roof and mechanical system renovation. The facility now features a new, translucent 140-foot clearspan laminated timber truss system designed to meet hurricane wind loads. Existing bearing masonry and concrete walls at the perimeter were reused. The lightweight Structures Unlimited, Inc., insulated, light-transmitting skylight system and translucent wall panels from strategic partner Kalwall Corporation bring quality daylight into the facility. A dehumidification system and fabric ductwork complete the installation.
