Pre-engineered Solution for Maryland Aquatic Center
The Prince Frederick, Maryland, aquatic center includes three massive, translucent, ridge-style enclosures. The largest of these pre-engineered structural aluminum composite systems is a 103-foot by 203-foot enclosure, with offset ridge, housing a 10-lane, 50-meter lap pool. The other two enclosures join the lap pool at 90-degree angles and are each 77 feet wide by 83 feet long. David Almy, Architect, of Smolen Emr Ilkovitch and Associates, "wanted a system that could deliver daylight and still insulate against heat and cold." Learn more

Monumental Daylighting Enclosure System Contributes to AIA Award
For the replacement of an outdated, outdoor community swimming pool and bathhouse with a new indoor community swimming pool at the existing Joseph G. Caputo Community Center in Ossining, New York, Lothrop Associates of Valhalla, New York, received the 2007 Public Interior Architecture award from the Westchester/Mid-Hudson Chapter of AIA. Translucent Skylight Makes Workout More Comfortable
According to Kyle Ryan's article, "Listen and Lighten
Up", in the September 2003 issue of Recreation Management,
"
lighting affects people
Poor lighting and sound
insulation can make people uncomfortable quite easily
that
discomfort can translate into lost revenue." Life Time Fitness
is profiled as a health-club chain that has hit upon the formula
for success. According to William Doerr, director of architecture
for Life Time Fitness, "The real challenge is getting light
to the middle of the space. That's partly accomplished by
the massive, two-plus story atrium in every club, which expands
to the center of the building. During
the day, light passes through the translucent skylight of
the atrium and provides a diffused glow." Their atrium skylights
are supplied by Structures Unlimited, Inc.; for more information,
read our Life Time
Fitness Centers Project Report. Doerr continues, "The
challenge has been keeping the intimacy of it. What we've
done is brought that skylight in further and made it a much
more predominant piece. You can grow it without getting lost
in it. It really gives customers a reference point to where
they entered; they're always aware of the atrium."
