Sustainable Design Through Daylighting

(1) AIA/CES Learning Unit – Contact Hour – Health/Safety/Welfare

Topics discussed include daylighting strategies available through the integration of structural sandwich panels, energy conservation, enhancements, options, form and aesthetics. The many benefits to health, productivity, safety and sustainable design will be discussed, as well as specialty applications including explosion venting, blast resistance, OSHA fall through protection and hurricane resistance. *This course is presented on behalf of Structures Unlimited’s strategic partner Kalwall®.

LEED Credits With Translucent Daylighting

(1) AIA/CES Learning Unit – Contact Hour – Health/Safety/Welfare
(1) GBCI CE Hour for LEED AP BD+C

Using various forms of translucent daylighting to earn LEED credits and/or assist in the implementation of green or sustainable design. Topics discussed include the origins of translucent daylighting techniques, energy conservation and opportunities offered in contrast, design, form and aesthetics. Also included are discussions surrounding recycled content, heat island effect and light pollution reduction. *This course is presented on behalf of Structures Unlimited’s strategic partner Kalwall®.

Sustainable Design Using Highly Insulated Diffused Natural Daylight

(1) AIA/CES Learning Unit – Contact Hour – Health/Safety/Welfare

Objectives of this course will be to have the participants leave with the ability to understand the health, safety, productivity, protection and aesthetic benefits of Natural daylighting in occupied spaces. The benefits to the occupants of a space with diffused sunlight (no glare) instead of direct sunlight (glare). Understanding Natural Daylight improves occupant’s attendance productivity and health. Also the benefits of designing with low solar heat gain to lower the energy costs of cooling and high insulation properties benefiting the efficiency of heating of the building. There will also be explanation about providing safety of occupants egressing a building during a fire. Attendees will also learn about safety of providing a daylighting material, which can meet OSHA fall through, windborne debris, blast resistance and explosion venting protection.

This course can be found online at AEC Daily. The diffuse light-transmitting and composite technology of translucent structural sandwich panels has increasingly caught the imagination of architects and designers because it is possible to maximize wall or roof daylighting while minimizing energy loss, with consequent savings in the running costs of heating, air conditioning, and artificial lighting. This course explores the fundamental connection between light and health by examining how translucent structural sandwich panels deliver glare-free, diffuse daylight deeper and more evenly into spaces with maximum thermal efficiency.
